As the holiday season approaches, Troy Community Consolidated School District 30-C is celebrating a remarkable display of generosity, kindness, and community spirit taking place across all district buildings and departments.

From elementary classrooms to transportation garages, Troy 30-C students, staff, and families are demonstrating what it truly means to give thanks and give back during this special time of year.

Students Leading with Compassion

At Cronin Elementary, students and families have rallied together to support neighbors in need through a robust food drive, collecting essential items to stock local mini food pantries. Last year, the food drive was able to help stock 8 pantries, and this year, with the amazing week-long food drive, the Cronin Parent Advisory Committee stocked 14 mini pantries! 

Meanwhile, 4th grade students at Hofer Elementary are spreading joy to local seniors by creating heartfelt cards, brightening the day of those who might otherwise feel forgotten during the holidays. The Cards for Seniors event has been organized by Senator Meg Loughran Cappel with an intention of delivering holiday greeting cards to seniors living in residential communities. 

"Watching our students embrace the spirit of giving reminds us why we do what we do," said Dr. Schrik, Superintendent of Troy 30-C. "These acts of kindness don't just help those in need; they shape our young people into compassionate community members who understand the power of generosity."

A Seven-Year Tradition of Gratitude

The holiday spirit has extended throughout every corner of the district, including a beloved tradition now in its seventh year. Executive Director of Operations, Ben Hettel has once again brought holiday cheer to the Facilities Services and Transportation Departments through his annual Thanksgiving Turkey and Pie Giveaway.

Staff members earn entries into the drawing by completing a simple but meaningful task: sharing something they are grateful for at Troy 30-C. These heartfelt reflections expressed appreciation for teamwork, student connections, and the family environment that defines the district.

"This time of year always reminds me how thankful I am for the people who make Troy such a special place," said Hettel. "Our Facilities and Transportation staff work hard every day to support students and staff behind the scenes. The giveaway is just one small way to show appreciation for all they do and to celebrate the gratitude that connects us as a team."

In a touching display of care for their own Troy 30-C family, transportation department staff and district office employees have organized donation drives specifically to support Troy students and their families who may need extra help this season. Their efforts ensure that every child in our district can experience the warmth and joy of the holidays.

Community Partners Join the Mission

The Troy 30-C mission is strengthened by generous community partners who are making the holidays brighter for local families. Hope Lutheran Church and Shorewood Jewel Osco are collaborating to supply turkeys and side dishes for Thanksgiving dinner, while Waters Edge Church in Shorewood is contributing the pies. This spirit of partnership highlights the deep connection between Troy 30-C and the community it serves. Further extending their support, ComEd donated $1,000 to the Galowich YMCA through the district's electric power program, directly benefiting community members and Troy 30-C students. The community partners’ generosity is greatly appreciated this holiday season.

2025-2026 Student Attendance Calendar

Craughwell Elementary, a cornerstone of educational excellence within the Troy 30-C School District, is pleased to announce plans for a modular classroom addition in response to significant enrollment increases. Over recent years, Craughwell has experienced growth across general education, special education, and its kindergarten through 4th grade bilingual program, reflecting a diverse and expanding student body.

Projections indicate continued enrollment growth, necessitating additional space to maintain optimal class sizes and support the educational needs of all students. Recognizing the importance of maintaining lower class sizes, which research shows benefit students, particularly those from low-income families, the Board of Education has prioritized this initiative.

One of the main goals in planning this project was to make it feel like a cohesive extension of the school. The modular classroom addition project includes the construction of eight classrooms, student and staff restroom facilities, and a dedicated staff work area. Situated discreetly at the rear of the school, away from Black Road, the addition will seamlessly integrate with existing facilities while enhancing safety and security measures.

Troy 30-C leaders emphasized the importance of the modular addition at Craughwell Elementary as both a short-term solution and part of the district’s long-term vision.

"We are committed to ensuring that all students at Craughwell Elementary have the resources and space needed for a quality education," said Dr. Paul Schrik, Superintendent of Troy 30-C.

 "This modular addition not only addresses our immediate needs but aligns with our district's strategic goals of effective facility management and financial sustainability,” said Ben Hettel, Executive Director of Operations at Troy 30-C. 

Scheduled for completion before the start of the upcoming school year in August, the modular unit will operate fully interconnected with the main school building, ensuring a cohesive learning environment without the need for students or staff to go outside to access the modular classroom addition.

It’s important to note that this modular classroom addition is intended as a temporary solution to address the school’s immediate space needs. Compared to the significant cost of constructing a permanent addition, this project provides much-needed relief at a fraction of the expense, allowing the district to maintain lower class sizes while being fiscally responsible.

This project directly supports one of the key priorities in the Troy 30-C Strategic Plan: Effective Use of Facilities and Financial Sustainability. As part of this ongoing work, Troy 30-C recently completed a series of Facilities Visioning Committee meetings that brought together a wide range of stakeholders—including parents, staff, community members, and district leaders—to begin shaping the future of our school facilities.

More conversations and planning efforts will take place in the months ahead as the district explores long-term solutions to meet the challenges of growing enrollment, not only at Craughwell Elementary but across all Troy 30-C schools.
